چکیده

freshwater microalgae and other plant-like organisms. They are used in the production of pharmaceuticals, diet supplements, pigments, and biofuels, and also used as feeds in aquaculture. Phytoplankton are cultured to feed bivalve molluscs (all life stages), the early larval stages of crustaceans, and the zooplankton (e.g., rotifers, copepods) that are used as live food in fish hatcheries. Flagellates and diatoms are two important types of phytoplankton at the base of the food chain. They manufacture cellular components through the process of photosynthesis, taking up carbon dioxide and nutrients from the water and using light as an energy source. The microalgae used as feed in hatcheries vary in size, environmental requirements, growth rate, and nutritional value (Fig. 1, Tables 1 and 2) (Helm et al., 2004). When selecting a species for culture, it is important to take all of these parameters into consideration. Most hatcheries grow a variety of species that serve different needs throughout the production cycle with respect to size,

Impact of Climate Change on Fisheries and Aquaculture Activities in Southern Iraq

The impacts on aquaculture and fisheries sectors from climate change in the southern part of Iraq will likely to be both positive and negative arising from direct and indirect impacts on natural resources. The main elements of climate change that could potentially impact fisheries and aquaculture activities in Iraq are temperature, rain patterns, shortage of freshwater, circulation, upwelling, ...

Towards Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture: Lessons from Caprellids (Crustacea: Amphipoda).

The search for alternative live feed organisms and the progression of Integrative Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) are currently being highly prioritised in EU strategies. Caprellids could potentially be an important exploitable resource in aquaculture due to their high levels of beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids, fast growing nature and widespread distribution. Furthermore, since they are...

Onion powder as feed additive in Procambarus clarkii culture

120 days trial was performed to evaluate the effect of dietary onion powder on the growth performance of red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii. Crayfish with initial body weight of 1.37±0.13 g were randomly stocked to experimental tanks. Four different onion powder levels in ratios of 10, 20, 30, and 40 g/kg were added to the formulated experimental basal feed and a control group was fed with ...

How can mariculture better help feed humanity?

Citation: Olsen Y (2015) How can mariculture better help feed humanity? Front. Mar. Sci. 2:46. The primary production of the marine and the terrestrial domains are similar, ∼49 and 56 Gt C year −1 , respectively (Field et al., 1998), and the marine primary production must likely be more readily available for grazing animals because it is primarily in the form of unicellular phytoplankton. We ha...
